Music for me has always been both salve and dagger, and this year was no different. I’m an obsessive music fan, listening to albums over and over, pouring through every song, analyzing lyrics, tone, instrumentation, and silence.

These are my top 5 albums of the year, as in the albums I played obsessively, whether they be old or new.

  1. @marklanegan The Winding Sheet. (1990).

A grunge era masterpiece. Completely underrated. Featuring a pre-Nevermind @kurtcobain

So deceptively simple, almost a bare string of musical accompaniments but packs such a deep and resounding punch to the gut.

2. @angelolsenmusic Big Time (2022).

I literally wept when I first heard the song All The Good Times. It was like the salve I needed to go through every break up (real and imagined). The album plays so cleanly, with Angel’s vocals glittering through each track like a knife or a jewel, whichever hurts the best (and brightest). Missed my chance to see her perform this year and I’ll never forgive myself 🥲

3. @marklanegan Bubblegum (2004).
